Camden High School History

Camden High School (CHS), originally known as Camden Manual Training and High School was located at 123 Federal Street in 1891. Forty-eight boys entered and were taught by the male principals of the city. In 1894, a group of girls were admitted and ordinary teachers were assigned to the school. The school continued to increase and had to relocate. The new building was at Haddon and Newton Avenues.

In 1918 our present building was built for senior high school students. The school was designed by architects Arthur Truscott and Paul ArmonDavis III. Camden High School replaced the earlier Camden Manual Training and High School that was located on Haddon and Newton Avenues. However, it was necessary to allow ninth grade students to enter because no elementary school building s werebuilt due to war conditions. The present building was overcrowded for a few years. By 1959, the annex to the main building was added to alleviate the over-crowdedness and several junior high schools were built. As a result, Camden High School consisted of 10th, 11th and 12th grades.

As the years progressed, CHS continued to grow which led to the construction of a vocational complex in 1969. With additional space, CHS was able to readmit the freshman class. Since that time, Camden High School has shown a tradition of excellence in academics, sports (winning several state championships), the Lunar Science Project (participating in Orbit ’81) and in 1990, the marching band traveled to London. In keeping with tradition, we predict excellence for years to come.
